What's an oxymel?

It's that perfect time of year to have all your immunity preparations started! I wanted to share my Elderberry Oxymel recipe. It's one I make instead of the elderberry syrup.

An Oxymel is a herbal extraction using vinegar and honey. The extraction pulls vitamins and minerals out of medicinal herbs creating an alcohol-free tincture that taste amazing and is super easy to make!

Elderberries are packed with essential nutrients, vitamin C, and is a good preventative for colds and flu and can reduce the severity and duration of symptoms.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1/2 cup elder berries
  • 1/4 cup rosehips
  • 2 star anise pods
  • 10 cloves
  • 1 or 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 5 cardamon pods
  • 1 1/2 cups raw honey
  • 1 1/2 cups raw apple cider vinegar

Add all ingredients into a clean dry quart size jar. Place a piece of parchment paper between jar and lid.

Make sure to shake your oxymel after you have added ingredients as well as shaking it at least once a week before it's time to strain. Strain after 4-6 weeks.

Use what you have! or get creative with your ingredients. I have made this recipe with only elder berries and rosehips and it was delicious!

Don't forget to Label & date.
